Why 87W instead of 61W?
The 15-inch MacBook Pro has a larger power budget than the 13-inch models that commonly use 61W. The 87W adapter's top USB-PD output is 20.2V at 4.3A, providing roughly 87W for compatible systems. It also negotiates lower voltage profiles with supported USB-C devices.
USB-C does not make every Mac charger identical
A lower-wattage USB-C adapter can physically connect to a 15-inch MacBook Pro, but it may charge more slowly when the notebook is active. Matching the recommended wattage is especially useful during sustained workloads. The adapter accepts 100-240V AC at 50-60Hz, so the electrical input range is suitable for international use with the correct plug.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2019 moved to a 96W recommended adapter, so that model should not be grouped into this 87W listing.
