Why the 15-inch Retina model uses 85W
The larger Retina MacBook Pro has a higher power requirement than the 13-inch version, which is commonly paired with the 60W MagSafe 2 adapter. Matching the intended 85W class helps the notebook charge while handling demanding processor and graphics workloads.
MagSafe 2 is a specific connector generation
The magnetic plug is flatter and wider than original MagSafe. Apple lists 100-240V AC input at 50-60Hz for the adapter and a 20V, 4.25A DC output. Original MagSafe, MagSafe 2, MagSafe 3 and USB-C are separate connection types, so the charging port on the laptop should be checked before purchase.
